her *real* first birthday
We held Lil’s party before her actual birthday so that our out-of-town friends and family could be there. An additional bonus of this set up was that we got to celebrate twice!
We kept her actual birthday fairly low-key. We wanted to take her to the zoo, but with highs scheduled over 100 degrees, we decided to skip it.
She opened a present from us — a barn puzzle with knobs that she loves to take apart, but can’t yet put back together. She also likes to moo at the cow piece and scream excitedly at the horse piece. She’s working on the sheep’s “baa” — we’re big into our animal noises these days.
We also bought her a legit pool (no more swimming in rubbermaid containers for our baby!) & a sprinkler, but neglected to wrap them. She was unsure of both at first, as she is with most new things, but after a few exposures, she seems happy to dunk toys & sticks in the pool while standing safely outside of the pool. And the sprinkler is fun to stick her hands under, but our well water is super-cold and I think that might prevent her from really getting into it.
I’m still working on her homemade present. :)
After giving her presents, we lit a candle on the ice cream cake that we bought
her Jason, sang happy birthday to her, and let her go crazy with the ice cream cake. She didn’t make quite the mess that we expected, nor did she eat much of it. She did, though, keep that birthday hat on for the entire ordeal.
The night ended with a bath, followed by some book-reading, and sleep. I think it was a pretty good day, full of lots of smiles and family time. I still can’t believe she’s a year old! What happened to my tiny baby? On the other hand, it does feel like she’s been with us for far longer than a year… she’s changed our lives forever, for the better. We’re so lucky to have her! And we hope that she’ll always feel lucky to have us!
