Lilly’s Baptism

August 10, 2011

Our baby girl was baptised on a super-hot July morning.

We were lucky enough to have all of her closest relatives (grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles, & cousins) present for the occasion.  This is HUGE, given that half of them live in Philly and half live in Milwaukee, and we were so glad that all of them could make the trip to MI to meet & cuddle Lilly!

The visiting started on a Thursday, with the arrival of Lilly’s Grammy, Poppy, Aunt Brey, and cousin Maelynn, and thank goodness, too – they were a huge help in getting the house ready for Lilly’s post-baptism reception.  Cousin Maelynn was super-sweet with both Lilly and the dogs.  She gave Lilly about a million gentle kisses during the week that they were here – it was adorable. Maelynn was also super-wonderful with the dogs, petting them, kissing them, and pushing them out of her way when she was done playing with them. She also learned to tell them to “sit” by the end of the week, a cute addition to her already cute repertoire of animal noises (two weeks later, Jason and I still look at each other and say HEEE HAAAWWW in our best Maelynn impression…).

Saturday afternoon, Uncle Kevin, Aunt Amy, and cousins Peter, Lucy, and Thomas stopped by to adore baby Lilly.  Seriously.  So much adoration – especially from Peter and Lucy, who coo’d at Lilly in the sweetest way.  I’m really glad that Lilly’s little cousins love her so much already…  I’m sure the 5 cousins are going to have a blast together as they grow.

Later on Saturday, Lilly, Grammy, and I went to the hotel where my family was staying to prepare dishes for the post-baptism lunch and introduce Lilly to her GREAT grandparents, Great Aunt Tami, and Uncle Robby.  There was much baby adoring and a little cooking (done by everyone BUT me – thanks for your help everyone!).  Later in the evening, everyone met up at the hotel for pizza dinner and more baby loving.

Lilly’s baptism was Sunday morning, and she showed everyone what a wonderful baby she is!  She slept through almost the entire service – opening her eyes and waking briefly just before the water was poured on her head.  She looked a little confused, but didn’t cry at all, and went back to sleep just moments after her head was dried off.  Yep, that’s our little girl.  Very sweet.

I should mention that Lilly had two very sentimental baptismal gowns to choose from for this special day — one gown was worn by Jason & his siblings & her cousin Maelynn; the other was worn by me, my siblings, my mom, my grandfather, and part of it was worn by my great-grandmother.  Jason and I flipped a coin in the car on the way to church (no minute like the last minute), and Lilly ended up wearing my family’s gown for the church service and Jason’s family’s gown for the party & pictures that followed.  The little bonnet that she wore was my great-grandmother’s handkerchief that my Grandma B sewed into a bonnet, and when my baby girl gets married, she can use the handkerchief as her “something old”.  She also got a beautiful white blanket from her great grandparents – made by one of the women’s prison ministries at their church and blessed by their congregation!  I love sentimental stuff like this, and Lilly is really lucky to have two families with sentimental garb, even if it means she had to choose which outfit to wear when!

After the baptism, the entire family came back to our house for lunch: pulled pork, salads & desserts made by baby’s grandmas & great-grandmas, and cake!  {Here’s where I note that I had big plans for elaborate party decor that never happened because I was too busy snuggling the baby.  Baby snuggles trump most everything these days!}  We were also joined by a few close friends, and it was great to have a chance to introduce them to Lil.

Our awesome friend (and photographer!), Denis, agreed to take some pictures to remember the occasion, and we are SO SO happy that he did.  He took some really fantastic photos & we’re loving them.  (If you’re in SW MI and looking for a photographer, I’d be happy to send you his contact info!)  Here are a few of our faves from the day:

Overall, we had a really wonderful time & I hope that our family did, too.  Thanks to everyone for making the trip to MI for such a special day for our girl!

This is Lilly’s story but I don’t want to leave sweet little Lucy out, She also wore the Baptismal gown and looked as cute as she does in the cowgirl hat.
Lilly was an EXCEPTIONAL baby on her day; she was so quiet during the entire ceremony! An exceptional baby with great parents!

Thanks for sharing the baptism 🙂

We had two christening gowns available – the one on my side of the family was beautiful, and was used by my grandparents. The one on my husband’s side was not so lovely, short, scratchy and greying white! So as not to cause offence, we went for wearing conventional clothes on each child – little white dresses for the girls, and a wee shirt and jeans for our son.

Love the photos, and what a lovely family occasion.
