powerless

February 22, 2011

Like, we are literally without power.  (& heat & water, because we need electricity to have the rest of the trifecta).

An ice storm swept through on Sunday, causing massive power outages in SW MI.  Luckily, we have friends with power who are generous enough to let us take their water & electricity — all while enjoying their nice, warm 65 degree house.

(On a related note, this is the second friend’s house I’ve showered at in the 1.5 years we’ve lived here.  We continually borrow things from the generous people around us…  I am starting to wonder if we are THOSE friends.  You know?  Total moochers.  Sigh.)

We have probably 3-4 trees that are either partially down or completely down, so it looks like JT will have fun with the chainsaw this spring.  (More photos to come when I’m not mooching off of someone else’s computer/internet).

Rumor has it we’ll be powerless until Thursday.  Cross your fingers that we get it back sooner… I miss my internet!  (Srsly.  Out of all that we’re missing, the internet is what I feel most deprived of.  I can put on another sweater for warmth, melt snow for water, but internets? I cannot fix.)

Suggestions & advice on how to best avoid freezing pipes and/or dogs is welcome.

Oh my gosh! That’s horrible! I hope you guys get your goods back soon. Don’t worry, you aren’t “those” neighbors. They all know you were just unlucky with the weather and would hope you’d do the same for them. Now if you were people who had a broken shower and didn’t fix it just because you KNOW you can go to the neighbors, haha, that’s another thing.

    Stay warm!

Good thing you got rid of those killer trees right next to your house! It could have been one of those on a roof!

Sorry to hear about the no power thing. We got, being southern Twin Cities Mn, got 19 inches of snow between Sunday morning and Monday afternoon. Luckily we never lost power. I’d rather have the tons of snow and no ice storms! Don’t know about the internet thing unless you want to send smoke signals! Good luck Kemo Sabe!!

Can you drain the pipe in the house so you do not have problems if they freeze?

This is not good. Thankfully you have generous friends. We went through this a long while ago and were without power for a week! 🙂

We go t a little ice but mostly snow and Aunt Tami got stuck here! She came on Fri. and intended to go home on Sun. but she just left today. It was ok because Grandpa got zapped again yesterday and she really wanted to be here for that. He’s beating good again 🙂

Been there! I hate it! There’s the pipe insulation stuff, kinda like foam with foil outside (hubs in the contractor and knows the technical term for this stuff). But it just slips on your pipes like a blanket. And definately drain them down (as mentioned before). Good luck!
