anniversary week: pre-wedding fun

October 5, 2009

Yesterday, Jason and I celebrated our first anniversary!  I thought I’d spend this week remembering our wedding weekend and sharing some of our favorite pictures with you (we finally received our professional photos last week, so I have all sorts of goodies to share!).

I grew up outside of Milwaukee, and most of my extended family continues to live in the area.  Jason’s family primarily lives in the Philadelphia area.  We decided early on that we’d get married in Milwaukee (instead of Minneapolis, where we lived at the time) so that only one family would have to travel.  We also knew the Milwaukee area well, so could plan fun pre-wedding activities for our guests.

Jason and I drove to Milwaukee on the Wednesday before our wedding.  That Wednesday was also my final deadline for all wedding-related crafts and planning to be finished… we wanted to spend our time in Milwaukee celebrating with family – not gluing ribbons on ceremony programs.  This ended up being a great decision, because we could just relax and have fun – and we had such a blast.

Because Jason’s family and many of our friends would be traveling from out of state, we wanted to make sure we had plenty for them to do while in Milwaukee.  We had our rehearsal dinner on Thursday, and then planned a brewery tour and skating party for Friday.

My lovely ribbon bouquet (the ribbons came off of gifts at our bridal showers).

The dinner after our rehearsal took place at John Hawk’s Pub, a cute little British-style pub in downtown Milwaukee. It was exactly what we wanted – cozy, comfortable, and with delicious food!

Jason organized a tour of Lakefront Brewery on Friday afternoon. Most of our out-of-town guests arrived in Milwaukee Friday morning, and we were thrilled that they could join us on the tour. The adults got pint glasses with unlimited beer refills, and the kids got homebrewed rootbeer.

Later that evening, we hosted an ice skating party at the Ponds of Brookfield. Skating, pizza, popcorn, and beer – what could be more fun? We also surprised Jason’s mom with a cake for her birthday!

Jason brewed a special “poppin’ the question pumpkin ale” and I created 6-pack and bottle labels.  He also brewed 3 other batches of beer – we somehow went through about 20 gallons of beer in 4 hours.

We also made name tags that had a slot for name and something others should ask you about.  We hoped that this would facilitate mingling… I don’t have evidence of whether it worked, but it certainly was fun to see what everyone wrote on their name tags!

I was brave and skated, but was envisioning myself falling and breaking a leg the entire time.

The kids got rides in the penguin sled.

Jason led the crowd in a rousing “Happy Birthday” to his mom!

At the end of the night, we bid farewell until our wedding…

I love the picture at the rehearsal dinner where you are smiling, but Jason is just gazing at you…so sweet! Love the nametags too…I still don’t think I know the meaning of “the boss” and I’m from Edina too. Happy Anniversary! Oct 4 is a great day, if I do say so!

    Happy Anniversary.

As I have mentioned before we don’t have the whole shower thing – we also don’t have rehearsal dinners, and of course with Jason there had to be some beer involved!
